THEOMOL

Cold Molecule Theory
(THEOMOL)

Description

alt text The team gathers all the theorists of the laboratory, it is structured in the form of 4 research operations (RO)
OR1: Structure: atoms, molecules, ions
OR2: Formation, cooling and spectroscopy of neutral and ionized molecules
OR3: Cold material: dynamics, control and applications
OR4: Microscopic processes: astrophysics, plasmas

These ROs involve very precise studies of the structure, interactions, collisions and control of quantum systems. Each RO is coordinated by a leader and involves several members of the team.
The first three ROs will be devoted to the study of cold and ultra-cold matter and the fourth will bring together studies conducted on microscopic processes in astrophysics and plasma physics.
In recent years, researchers around the world have succeeded in producing cold molecules in their absolute ground state and we have largely participated in the advances that have made this possible. We are now working on finding the optimal conditions to reach the quantum degeneracy to obtain a condensate of these molecules in their absolute ground state.
OR1, OR2 and OR3 are interested in exploring the openings and perspectives that will open up such as the manipulation and control of these molecules to make them an alternative platform for quantum simulation. The astrophysical processes (OR4) are complementary to the previous studies, in that they different parameters (mass in particular), but the formalisms are similar. similar. Thus we will treat non-reactive collisions (ro-vibrational de-excitations) or reactive collisions such as charge exchanges between molecular ions and neutral species. We also study the microscopic processes that take place in hot plasmas of interest for fusion. fusion. The corresponding rates, which are precisely calculated, determine the radiative properties of the plasmas of the plasmas, in particular the opacity and the radiative losses, via a collisional-radiative calculation that can describe a plasma out of thermodynamic equilibrium.
