Title: Focused ion beam with correlated electron feedback
Under the supervision of Patrick Cheinet and Yan Picard
Abstract: This thesis focuses on the development of a novel focused ion beam (FIB) system based on an innovative principle. Within the Matière Froide Corrélée team at LAC, it has been demonstrated that, under specific conditions, when a cesium atom is excited to a Rydberg state and subsequently ionized by an electric field, the resulting ion and electron exhibit correlated positional behavior.

The aim of this work is to adapt this principle to the ColdFIB prototype, a FIB system developed in collaboration with Orsay Physics. The ColdFIB column employs cesium atoms excited to a Rydberg state and ionized by an electric field. The primary goal of this thesis was to design an electrode configuration capable of extracting, collecting, and magnifying the electrons onto their detector while preserving their positional correlation with the ions.

As a result, the ions are focused into a spot of a few tens of nanometers on the sample, while the electrons are magnified on the detector by a few tens of millimeters, all while preserving their position correlation. The ultimate goal of this device is to achieve sub-nanometric resolution in etching, imaging, and low-energy ion implantation for applications in nanotechnology.
